Detroit City Youth Opportunities Magazine® the platform for the voices of our Youth
Detroit City Youth Opportunities Magazine®, LLC (DCY~Opp Magazine) is a new magazine based in Detroit, Michigan specifically for children and youth. The youth-focused magazine features young scholars, athletes, entrepreneurs, and Metro-Detroit events and opportunities. Everything in both our print and digital magazine is written by youth in our Academy or the Detroit Community.
Our youth are our BEST source of the latest in youth events, stories, talent, and trends! Whether it’s a board of Generation Z students in public, private, charter schools and even home-schooled or students wish to delve into journalism as members of our Academy, we depend on our youth to bring their perspective!
Youth from Detroit and its surrounding cities and are selected because of their skills, leadership, academic achievement and passion to learn. They advise us of what’s trending in their world, who’s hot, the best in sports, and what matters to the young people today. In short, OUR YOUTH keep DCY~Opp current!
The magazine allows young people the OPPortunity to strengthen their skills, and develop other talents. They will work solo, and on teams against print deadlines, editing, writing and researching. They will interview community leaders, professionals, and their next-door neighbors. Youth will write reviews on local businesses, events, and schools. They are the eyes, ears, nose, and taste buds of DCY~Opp Magazine. DCY~Opp supports literacy through our programming. Articles and content from community youth can be found in print copies of the magazine as well as digital (online).
Our youth have reported live at political, community and major events, including the NAACP ACT-SO NABJ-Detroit, and been requested on special assignments at the UniverSoul Circus, L.I.T.E. FEST sponsored by Ford Company, and the Ford Freedom Awards sponsored by Ford Resource and Engagement Center. They have also created documentaries and commericals for local businesses that matter to them.
DCY~Opp is unique, exciting and innovative!
Our niche as a magazine publishing company covers opportunities offered to Detroit/Metro Detroit Youth in…
- Leadership Programs,
- Arts & entertainment
- and a host of other activities/initiatives on the local, state, regional and national level.
What’s exciting about DCY~Opp is our inclusion of children and youth as journalists (reporters, photographers, graphic artists, columnists & marketers, producers, talk show hosts, and editors)! We provide youth with a pathway to their career choices in journalism, photography, broadcasting, and opportunities to meet professionals in these fields.
We provide two primary opportunities for young people in Detroit communities.
IF you are a young person (4-17 years old) who loves to draw, write or takes awesome photos, YOU can have your original work published in DCY~Opp Magazine. Sign-up and submit your original work! Join our YAB (Youth Advisory Board). Send in your original artwork, poetry, articles, and photographs and we might select it to be published in our online or print publications. Join the Academy because…
For those young people (7-17 years old) who are interested in committing themselves to explore journalism and broadcast, apply to the Academy. Youth with the time and commitment to exploring the world of journalism will learn about production, documentaries, video podcasting and more. In the Academy, we seek students who are interested in a career in journalism, or who enjoy writing, public speaking, photography, art, sports, current events, fashion blogging, politics, or gender, race and culture issues, reporting, interviewing and the world of broadcast. We are a virtual classroom of journalism basics, mentorship, public speaking, and growth.
